Register your Christmas lights display

Are you illuminating the outside of your home and garden with Christmas lighting displays? Register with Council

Latrobe City is calling on residents who illuminate the outside of their homes and gardens with Christmas lighting displays, to register their display with Council, so their locations can be published in the ‘Christmas Lights Itinerary’.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said there was an increasing interest in creating outside lighting displays in gardens and on homes at Christmas time, and Council would once again act as the focal point for people who wanted to share some of the joy they experienced, through facilitating and updating an itinerary of Latrobe homes with Christmas lights.

"Every night as Christmas nears, mums and dads are taking their children to see ‘the lights’. It’s a spectacle not just enjoyed by children, but something all of us enjoy whether young or old," Cr Jenkins said.

"Sometimes there are whole avenues of homes where neighbours have got together to share their Christmas joy. Sometimes the displays are simple, the shape of a humble home outlined in fairy lights, sometimes intricate with chasing bud lights, stars, Santas, reindeer or nativity scenes. The moment is magical as children and adults are enchanted by the lights; and the fact that so many have enjoyed their handiwork, gives great joy to the citizens who have worked hard to decorate their homes.

"While the decision to create a lighting display is up to each and every household, Council provides a service to the community by acting as a registration point, where those wishing to share the joy they have created can have their location registered, so that others know where to view these special Christmas lighting displays," Cr Jenkins explained.

"I urge residents with these displays to register them on Council’s Christmas Lights Itinerary, so they can be enjoyed by others. Some people might be shy to register because they think their display isn’t as good as others. However, I urge those people to register their location anyway, because many streets become exciting places to visit not because there are one or two houses with impressive displays, but because lots of people in the street have contributed something," Cr Jenkins said.

"If you think you have a fantastic display, you may also wish to have your house judged in the ‘Christmas Lights Competition’. There are some great prizes being offered through Bunnings, Telstra and from Council. However, the important thing is to register your location so that others can enjoy your display."

If you need help with a display for your home, Santas Workshop at the former Morwell East Pre-school, Vincent Road, Morwell, is a great place for ideas, inspiration and materials to make large Christmas decorations for the outside of your home. It’s a wonderful community initiative where people work together sharing their skills, using materials donated by local businesses. Santa’s Workshop is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10am – 4pm.

The ‘Christmas Lights Itinerary’ which will let citizens know where they can see Christmas lighting displays this year, will be published in the Latrobe Valley Express throughout December until Christmas. Residents can register their location by completing the simple registration form in the newspaper, or merely by telephoning Council on 1300 367 700.
