Boolarra Primary Takes Out Local Bike Ed Challenge Latrobe City Council Boolarra Primary School has won the Kristy Olsen Memorial Trophy for the fourth consecutive year, and Traralgon’s Grey Street Primary School was runner up in the Latrobe City leg of the 2009 Bike Ed Program Challenge By Latrobe City Council - 11th September 2009 - Back to News Held at the International Power Children’s Traffic School in Morwell today (Wednesday 2 September).
Both schools have won their way to the Regional Final being held at the children’s traffic school on 21 October.
Eight schools participated in the Latrobe City leg of the Challenge with Boolarra taking the winning lead with 588 and Grey Street Primary School scoring 564.
Other schools to compete were Tobruk Street Morwell and St Pauls Anglican Grammar School Traralgon equal fourth on 538 points. Traralgon’s St Gabriel’s finished in sixth spot on 535 points and Morwell Park on 533 with Flinders College Traralgon on 533 and Churchill North on 478.
Boolarra students Ryan Potter and Tessa Anderson were the leading scorers in their group with 83 and 82 points respectively and won the Best Boy and Girl awards.
Other encouragement award winners were Michelle Hurrell (Morwell Park), Courtney Scott (St Gabriel’s), Jye Nielson (Flinders), Beau Caldwell (Grey Street), Samantha Tullett (Churchill North) and Jack Aitken (Morwell Park).
International Power Traffic School committee member, John Hehir, explained that students throughout the day participated in a range of road safety related challenges. "These included demonstrating the correct way to signal a turn, how to safely enter and exit a roundabout, correct procedures at pedestrian crossings and traffic lights, and a host of other bicycle safety essentials.
In presenting the Kristy Olsen Memorial Trophy to the winners, Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the competition encouraged safe cycling and pedestrian habits at a young age. "It’s wonderful to see the young people demonstrate their road sense and skills so aptly, as being equipped with these at a young age will help foster awareness and responsible and safe driving habits in the years to come," Cr Price said.
Cowes and Newhaven will represent Bass Coast at the Regional Final, with Baw Baw, Wellington, South Gippsland and East Gippsland to hold their qualifying events over the next month.
