Delegates Enthusiastic About Business Visit To ChinaA Latrobe City led business delegation recently returned from overseas during which time businesses were given an opportunity to ascertain business prospects in China. By Latrobe City - 31st May 2007 - Back to News A Latrobe City led business delegation recently returned from overseas during which time businesses were given an opportunity to ascertain business prospects in China.
The group, consisting of nine businesses and five council representatives visited Shanghai and Taizhou, meeting with businesses and local government officials. In Taizhou, Latrobe’s sister city, delegates visited businesses of a similar nature to their own; while in Shanghai, a visit was arranged to visit the North Asia Victorian Government Business Office. According to Latrobe City’s senior economic development officer, Leo Billington, the accompanying local businesses embraced the unique opportunity to learn more about possible business links and cultural differences in China.
"On this trip, there was an excellent mix of diverse businesses covering building design and drafting, municipal planning, irrigation equipment, education, tourism, healthcare, retailing, clothing, bus equipment and timber products. There was a huge wealth of experience and expertise within these well established Latrobe City based businesses," Mr Billington said.
Andrew McConnell from Traralgon based business, Latrobe Irrigation and Pumps, said the trip opened his mind to the rapid pace of development now occurring in the world’s largest economy.
"Through Latrobe City’s sister city connections, I was fortunate to visit the Taizhou Agricultural Development Zone. There were over 10,000 pigs being farmed together with 1000 deer and 6000 ducks alongside large scale cereal cropping at the regional research facility.
"I was very pleased that I went to China. The experience has nurtured my appetite for another visit to build upon what I have learnt and subsequently I will explore a range of further business opportunities. Additionally, I will maintain business contacts with Taizhou as a means to understanding more about China," Mr McConnell said.
Lew Fisher, managing director of Fishers Latrobe Valley Pty Ltd, said the business visit was a commercial success for him. "I now plan to enter into a long term business relationship with a Shanghai based manufacturer. This will enable me to manufacture at a more competitive price to achieve greater sales into Europe, which in turn will create additional employment opportunities here in Latrobe City.
"The business connections I accessed were provided by the Victorian state government business representative based in Shanghai, and the Latrobe City’s sister city relationship provided the opportunity for me to benefit from their established leads. I am now seriously thinking of returning to the area to continue my business dealings," Mr Fisher added.
