While Neighbourhood Houses pride themselves on being an open house all year, visitors were especially encouraged to see the classes in action that included machine quilting, crazy patchwork, cake decorating and mosaics.

A highlight of the Open House was a display of six quilts from the ‘Quilts of Understanding’ from Wellington Shire, which are serving as models for similar quilts being designed and created in Traralgon East.

Coordinator Traralgon Neighbourhood Learning House, Jenny Poon, said

construction of the local quilts, which is an initiative of Neighbourhood Renewal, is now underway.

"Anyone interested in trying their hand at quilt making is invited to contact us at the Traralgon Neighbourhood Learning House and find out how they can become involved," Ms Poon said.

"Anyone can make squares, whether it be by painting, drawing, sewing or any other form of craft. You don’t have to be an expert or even be experienced, and it’s a great way to celebrate life," Ms Poon added.

Latrobe City’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said a wealth of classes among other activities was being undertaken at the Traralgon East Hall, emphasising some of the benefits of the Neighbourhood Renewal Program.

"The Traralgon East Hall came about very much because of community demand and community drive. Council’s purchase of the church hall through the State Government’s DHS Neighbourhood Renewal Program is the result of initiatives by local residents who identified the need for a suitable venue in Traralgon East for youth, neighbourhood house and other community activities.

"The quilt-making classes being held here reveal just one of the benefits the local community is enjoying through the Neighbourhood Renewal Project. "Programs such as these classes encourage people to develop and learn skills adding to their quality of life," Mr Buckley said.

The Traralgon East Hall is located on the corner of Jones Court and Shakespeare Street in Traralgon.
