Road Safety Upgrades for Local Gippsland Streets
‘Safe Travel in Local Streets’ program will roll out safety upgrades in Moe, Morwell, Traralgon, Drouin and Warragul.
The Andrews Government is making local streets safer in Gippsland thanks to a new program which works with councils and communities to improve local regional roads.
Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said safety upgrades would be rolled out in Moe, Morwell, Traralgon, Drouin and Warragul as part of the Victorian Government’s $20 million ‘Safe Travel in Local Streets’ program.
The program aims to create safer local roads for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, and reduce road trauma in regional communities across Victoria.
Regional Roads Victoria has worked with councils across the state to identify high-risk local roads and precincts, and design safety upgrades to address community road safety concerns.
Latrobe City Council will deliver a range of safety upgrades in the Moe, Morwell and Traralgon CBDs including a safer 40 km/h speed limit across the three CBD precincts, raised pedestrian crossings, painted centre medians, kerb ‘outstands’, pedestrian islands, painted centre median strips, and new signalised pedestrian crossings.
The works are expected to increase awareness of hazards, improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, and create a safer journey for people driving through the area.
Baw Baw Shire Council will deliver upgrades in Drouin including two new roundabouts along Hopetoun Road at the intersections with Young Street and Buln Buln Road, as well as speed bumps and pedestrian crossings along Young Street.
In Warragul, new kerbing and modified islands at the corner of Connor and Witton Streets will improve safety for pedestrians and motorists.
The works are due for completion by mid-2021.
This program is part of the Andrews Government's $1.4 billion investment in reducing road trauma in partnership with the Transport Accident Commission.
