Exhibition inspired by ‘the rose’Currently on show at the Latrobe Regional Gallery is a stunning exhibition of rose inspired artworks by some of Australia’s finest artists. By Latrobe City Council - 3rd March 2006 - Back to News 'a rose is a rose is a rose’ features photographs, paintings, installations and prints featuring the most loved of all flowers.
Numerous different attempts have been made by artists and writers to capture the essence of the flower and it has an enduring status as a subject in art and literature for centuries.
Latrobe Regional Gallery director, Louise Tegart, said flowers are a powerful emotional symbol for their role as tokens of affection, their ornamental use for formal occasions, and as votive offerings upon a grave.
"They are often linked to the most significant and memorable events of our lives. Flower meanings have been used to convey ideas, feelings and messages for centuries. It is a language that has been largely lost to us through lack of use. Yet there is one flower that has a multitude of meanings that are still known to us today," Ms Tegart said.
"What is it about the imagery of the rose that so fascinates us? It is one with which we feel intimately familiar – as a presence in a room with its scent, colour and shape, a rose can take possession of the viewer's innermost thoughts and emotions. The rose has become a symbol whose meanings are at once discrete, shared, and interchangeable, to the point where one singular meaning of the rose longer exists.
"The artists chosen for this exhibition have all explored the motif of the rose in diverse ways. For some it has become a recurring theme in their work that they revisit over long periods of time, for others it is a subject that they have chosen to illustrate a particular idea. The art works in this exhibition depicting the most loved of flowers speak to us with a greater intensity and subtlety than the rose does in nature. Several key themes can be teased out of the exhibition including; the rose as a symbol of death, decay and the brevity of life, the rose as a decoration or design, concepts of value and beauty and how we determine the length of time for each, the rose as a botanic species, and the rose in still life art and literature," Ms Tegart said.
Exhibiting artist Christine Johnson will be giving a talk on the beauty and structure of nature explored in the exhibition a rose is a rose is a rose on Tuesday 7 March at 10.30am. Cost is $5, $3 Concession, Latrobe Regional Gallery Friends members free. The exhibition continues until 26 March.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700. Entry is free.
