Boardwalks Complete Waterhole Creek Eastern Shared Path

The last stage in the completion of a 2.1 kilometre continuous off-road shared path along the east side of Waterhole Creek from Crinigan Road to Princes Drive has become a reality, with work completed this week on two boardwalks.

By Latrobe City - 19th March 2009 - Back to News

The boardwalks provide all-weather access across two major floodway drains running into Waterhole Creek.

Latrobe City councillor, Cr Graeme Middlemiss, said the path provides more recreational opportunities for residents by linking additional areas of the Bridle Estate with existing shared paths along Waterhole Creek.

"Cyclists, joggers, elderly strollers and mums with prams are already finding the new shared path a boon," Cr Middlemiss said.

"A number of options were evaluated before it was decided that a timber boardwalk would be constructed across the twenty-metre wide drains.

"At issue was how to provide for cyclists and pedestrians to cross safely at a reasonable cost without affecting the capacity of each floodway," Cr Middlemiss explained.

"While an initial design was considered for a low level crossing of each drain over culverts, it was decided that the path would look more appealing with the shared pathways elevated on boardwalks over the floodways, rather than disappearing into depressions in the landscape.

"It also means that the path will remain passable when there are more significant water flows in the floodways.

"The boardwalk designs additionally feature a tough, non slip decking made from recycled plastic, which is a positive step forward for the environment," Cr Middlemiss said.

"There are now continuous paths along both sides of the creek from Princes Drive to MERA Park, providing a loop for recreational walkers and cyclists of just over three kilometres.

"Projects in future years will see the path along the west side also extended to Crinigan Road, which will then provide a circuit of just over four kilometres," Cr Middlemiss added.
