Hospital Sunday RecreatedBass Coast residents are invited to recreate the historic ‘Hospital Sunday’ March on Saturday, 4 September 2010. By Bass Coast - 10th September 2010 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Arts and Leisure Manager, Jenny Churchill, said the march would happen 100 years to the day of the Hospital Sunday March, where townsfolk got together and demanded a hospital in the town.
"On 4, September 1910, members of the Wonthaggi community marched from the Wonthaggi Railway Station to the top of McBride Avenue," said Ms Churchill.
"The Wonthaggi Brass Band and members of the Fire Brigade led the march.
"This is exactly how it will happen when we recreate it on Saturday, 4 September 2010.
"I’d encourage all residents to come out and show their support for the Wonthaggi Hospital.
"We will be meeting at the Wonthaggi Railway Station at 11.45am – and there will be prizes for the best fancy dress for girls and boys," continued Ms Churchill.
There will also be a historic hospital display at the Railway Station Museum and the launch of Accepting the Challenge – A History of the Wonthaggi and District Hospital 1910-1970 at 12.45pm at Wishart’s Reserve.
Hospital Sunday was an important day in the calendar of Victorians in the latter half of the 19th Century and first half of the 20th Century, when collections were taken all over the state to raise money to fund public hospitals.
At 12noon on Tuesday, 14 September, Wonthaggi will also celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Proclamation Day. There will be a historical display in the Railway Station Museum from 11.00am to 1.00pm and a sausage sizzle after the whistle blows at midday.
