"These grants provide opportunities for young people who require extra support to fulfil their potential," explained Mr Hall.

"The goal of the program is to build strong, resilient communities by assisting young people to gain the skills and opportunities to contribute to a range of social, learning and cultural activities.

"The new guidelines have been developed through consultation with Regional Youth Affairs Networks, local government, sector representatives, research bodies, the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria and other Victorian government departments.

"Grants are offered to local government and non-government community organisations running programs to provide practical support and assistance for young people in the areas of life skills, mentoring, meditation, civic engagement, social enterprise, information and referral services, capacity building and advocacy.

"Grants range from $30,000 to $65,000 a year for a maximum of three years, and will assist applicants to meet the costs of providing programs, salaries, transport, administration, equipment, materials, printing and advertising.

Mr Hall said program guidelines and application forms are available at the Department of Victorian Communities website www.grants.dvc.vic.gov.au. and applications close on Friday, April 8th 2005.
