Incorrect Items Causing Landfill Machinary Damage

East Gippsland Shire Council and its service contractor for the Bairnsdale Regional Landfill and Recycling Facility, Gippsland Waste Services, are appealing to the public to take more care when offloading items at the facility.

Shire Waste Officer, Tilo Junge, said the area designated for green waste was causing the major problem.

"The contractors mulch the huge pile of green waste four times each year," Tilo said.

"Unfortunately there are items being found in the pile that are not suitable for mulching and have in fact caused damage to the machinery undertaking the mulching.

"Some of the contaminated items include hoses, containers, pots and rocks, which people use in gardens and may think could belong in green waste at the landfill. But they are certainly not suitable for the green waste pile.

"Amazingly, we’ve also found other items such as steel, tyres, plastic and a golf bag – this sort of material becomes a nuisance as it is inappropriate and causes an unnecessary extra workload for all concerned.

"Fortunately some of the unsuitable items are spotted before they enter the mulcher, but if they aren’t they can cause damage to the machinery, becomingly costly and timely," Tilo said.

Green waste accepted for mulching includes grass clippings, tree prunings and leaves. If some of this material is contained in plastic bags, there are bins provided in the vicinity for the plastic bags to be placed.

"The staff on site are more than willing to provide assistance with any waste issues, including sorting and recycling.

"We’re appealing to the public to take responsibility with their waste sorting so the contractors can continue to operate production smoothly, especially when mulching green waste.
