Latrobe City Council mayor, Cr Kellie O’Callaghan, said the funds offer support to organisations which play an important role in developing and supporting our community.

"The efforts of these community groups, is invaluable supporting physical wellbeing, educating our youth, assisting the elderly and preserving local heritage while promoting regional development.

"The grants are a small way Council is able to support these initiatives and encourage community cohesion and development. There are a wide range of projects approved by Council; however all share a common goal in improving community lifestyle," Cr O’Callaghan said.

The grants are separated into three categories, minor capital projects, community development and events.

"A variety of groups make up the 95 who will receive minor capital works grants. Those groups include service clubs, scouts and girl guides, sporting clubs, pre-schools, playgroups, hall and reserve committees and arts groups.

"Community development projects include Traralgon Neighbourhood Learning House for cooking courses, Gippsland Asbestos Related Disease Support (GARDS) for their newsletter and the Morwell Senior Citizens Club for a series of activities.

"Recipients of the community events grants include the Tyers Art Festival, the Filipino Fiesta and Latrobe Rose and Garden Show along with 23 other events serving community entertainment.

"These grants offer community groups a chance to improve the service they deliver to the community who are often caring for members of the community or creating engagement within the community and are vital to Latrobe City’s liveability," Cr O’Callaghan said.

All groups will be advised in writing this week of the outcome of their applications and a full page advertisement will appear in the Latrobe Valley Express.
