Masquerade Gala Evening Supports Latrobe L2P Mentor Program Young people in the Morwell electorate will find learning to drive easier thanks to a special fundraising event being held tomorrow night. By Russell Northe - 27th August 2014 - Back to News Member for Morwell and Chair of the Latrobe L2P Driver Mentor Program, Russell Northe said
Bendigo Bank Morwell was hosting the Masquerade Gala Dinner to raise funds for the Latrobe L2P Driver Mentor Program.
"Bendigo Bank has been raising money to assist the Latrobe L2P Driver Mentor Program for the past 12 months," Mr Northe said. "The Masquerade Gala ball is the final fundraising event of a number of fundraisers that Bendigo Bank has organised in support of the program."
Mr Northe thanked Bendigo Bank for its donation and said the funds raised would provide drivers under 21 years of age, without access to a vehicle or a driving supervisor, the opportunity to gain valuable on-road experience.
"We’re delighted to have an organisation such as the Morwell Bendigo Bank branch on board that recognises the importance of the L2P program to the local community," he said.
"We know that learners who complete 120 hours of supervised on-road driving experience have a 30 per cent lower crash rate for the first two years on their P-plates, compared with those who have only 50 hours of practice.
"However some young learners in the community simply do not have access to a vehicle or supervising driver to achieve the 120 hours practice required. This program addresses that issue."
Latrobe L2P Coordinator, Jennifer Murray said Berry Street was overwhelmed with the generosity of local businesses in particular Bendigo Bank and Morwell Lions Club.
Ms Murray said Bendigo Bank through its generosity and fundraising efforts had already raised $13,000 to support the program.
"There are many young people in our community who face difficulties in accessing the support and resources they need to achieve the 120 hours of driving experience required for obtaining their probationary drivers licence," Ms Murray said. "The money raised through Bendigo Bank will assist more young people in our community to access the program."
The L2P program is a state-wide initiative sponsored by VicRoads and was developed to support young people as part of Victoria’s Graduated Licensing system (GLS). To date almost 5,000 Victorians have benefited from the program.
The program is currently looking for volunteers with driving experience to help learner drivers gain on-the-road driving experience through the L2P program. Training is provided and anybody interested in becoming a volunteer mentor should call the Latrobe L2P coordinator Jennifer Murray on 5134 5971.
