v Brett opened the meeting welcoming everyone to the first Morwell Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) & Safer Community Group meeting.

v Explanation as to why the changes to Neighbourhood Watch came about and how the future looks for Neighbourhood Watch and what is expected from the community.

v Brett asked why people had come to the meeting – long involvement and feel that it (NHW) is still a valuable tool, history shows that communities are best when they look after themselves and this is what the program is about, helping community, community involvement, caring about the community, find out more about the changes and the support to police, brainstorming can solve community issues, NHW is a good thing, enjoyed involvement, the tag of NHW has advantages when you are trying to get something done, community needs to look after itself, community involvement, great chance to network, belief in the NHW program, community is the eyes and ears of the police, source of information to the police, vital part of the community, a way of solving issues, one voice sometimes gets missed but a multiple voice (such as NHW) is heard.

v Brett explained that membership would remain as is now. If you wish to come to the meetings you do not have to be an approved NHW volunteer, however if you wish to participate in NHW projects to be covered by the State NHW Insurance you will need to fill a NHW Volunteer Application and receive approval.

v Discussion re a possible town newsletter – to be looked at in the future. Geelong Town wide newsletter will be brought to next meeting.

v Discussion re meetings. Caroline expressed that although she will be attending the night town based meeting she had a preference for the area meeting and especially her meeting format which was held during the daytime. A daytime meeting is definitely something which can be looked at. To be followed up at next meeting.

v Gerard spoke about his graffiti removal project – Brett displayed photos of the work that Gerard had done. Councillor Middlemiss stated that if a graffiti issue was raised with Latrobe City they had a 24 hour turnaround clean up. Further discussion re the project to take place at next meeting.

v Newsletters – some areas have decided to keep going with newsletters and Brett is still providing a crime report to all areas. The difference is that it will now be town wide not just area oriented.

v Publicity of the meeting - Posters were provided for members to take and place where they thought it would inform the community that the meetings are on. Various members have also volunteered to take on the job of visiting schools to ask if the meetings could be promoted in newsletters.

CRIME REPORT
  • A variety of offences have been committed across the Morwell Police Service Area (PSA) however generally crime has dropped.
  • Over the month there were 24 burglaries committed with three offenders being charged with offences, one of them with multiple offences. Property stolen includes alcohol, DVD player, CD player, Xbox, PA system and tools.
  • In relation to the twenty four burglaries committed over the month forced entry was the most common form of entry due to the fact that residents are locking their premises whenever they are away.
  • Theft from motor vehicles is still an issue however it is the number of vehicles being left unlocked that is of greatest concern.
  • Whilst the number of vehicles stolen over the month was low the fact that a motorbike was left in an unlocked shed with the keys in the ignition is frustrating.

Police remind the community if they see something suspicious they should ring 000 or if they have information in relation to an offence contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au.
