Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has encouraged Latrobe Valley communities to register their town for the 2011 Victoria Tidy Towns awards before entries close on Friday 3 June

By Russell Northe - 25th May 2011 - Back to News

"The Victoria Tidy Towns awards build community pride by giving regional communities an opportunity to celebrate their innovative, sustainable and creative initiatives," Mr Northe said.

"The awards are a great way for your town to experience state-level recognition for everyday action taken to improve, maintain and sustain the local environment."

"I encourage all of our regional local governments, community groups, schools and individuals to enter their community initiatives into this year’s awards."

There are 10 different categories, plus the prestigious Tidy Town of the Year and Dame Phyllis Frost awards. Other awards include recognition for Water Conservation, Towards Zero Waste, Community Action and the new category, Community Leadership.

"The new Community Leadership category recognises outstanding achievement of a community group or organisation whose activities have effectively met community needs," Mr Northe said.

Mr Northe said it was essential that regional communities entering this year’s awards are aware they don’t have to create a new community initiative to be eligible.

"The Tidy Towns awards recognise new and old initiatives that have a positive impact on the sustainability of your community," Mr Northe said.

Entries for the 2011 Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Tidy Towns – Sustainable Communities Awards close on Friday 3 June. For further information, or to enter the awards please visit www.sustainability.vic.gov.au.
