Unemployment continues to rise in Latrobe

Latrobe region has one of the highest unemployment rates of all Victorian municipalities, figures from the September 2016 quarter have revealed.

The unemployment rate in Latrobe has continued to rise and is now at 11.0 per cent – a 3.7 per cent jump since December 2014.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said this increase is particularly distressing, given it has been confirmed the Hazelwood mine will cease operation on the 31 March 2017.

"Jobs in our region are already hard to come by," Mr Northe said.

"We’ve has a further blow to Latrobe Valley this week with the announcement that Johnson Health Tech (JHT) is relocating its Morwell office to Dandenong meaning a loss of 25 local jobs.

"Traralgon Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre also announced earlier in the week that it was closing its doors on Monday and 21 staff sadly lost their jobs.

"These additional jobs losses come as Hazelwood prepares to shut down in March next year with a loss of hundreds of direct and indirect jobs."

Mr Northe said the unemployment rate has skyrocketed, rising by more than 50 per cent in two years of Labor.

"More than 10,000 full-time jobs and 3289 full-time youth jobs have been lost in the Latrobe-Gippsland region since December 2014," Mr Northe said.

"Daniel Andrews said he would fight for every job, however these are hollow words for Latrobe Valley workers who are continually joining the unemployment queue.

"Latrobe Valley has been left out in the cold as our community faces a growing unemployment crisis. With the closure of Hazelwood in March, Daniel Andrews can’t neglect this region any longer."
