Council Funds Feast On East Festival

East Gippsland Shire Councillors last night agreed to provide a total of $30,000 worth of funding to the Feast on East Festival over the next three years.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 14th December 2006 - Back to News

At the Council Meeting they accepted a recommendation to provide $10,000 per annum for the financial years 2006/07- 2008/09 to support the major event.

The event will comprise seven distinct projects over a weekend in March 2007 and focus on local food and wine produce at a Feast On East Banquet.

It will also include a harvest picnic that will incorporate an arts program, industry expo, pie competition and the Gippsland Regional Signature Dish Awards.

The festival will also link directly with nine other food and wine events across the Gippsland that will be themed "Inspired by Gippsland: Food & Wine Celebration".

Mayor, Cr Mendy Urie said the inaugural Feast On East festival featured local food, wine and artists from the East Gippsland community and had been recognised as a quality event for the region.

"This is a major opportunity for East Gippsland to profile food and wine tourism and local food producers," she said.

"It is also an event that reflects much of the nature of the region and which can showcase our natural attractions as well as our produce."

Support for the event follows a November 2001 decision to allocate $40,000 per annum to fund four regional events over a three-year period.

Funding has so far been provided for the Lakes Entrance Sky Show, Twin Rivers Bream Classic and Up The Creek Discovery Festival.

The fourth allocation of the fund was used to fund two one off events, the Bairnsdale Air Show in 2005 and the KIA Bairnsdale Tennis Tournament in March 2006.

The Feast on East funding agreement recognises East Gippsland Shire as major sponsors and organisers will use the "1800" accommodation booking service of the regional Visitor Information Centre
