Paynesville Community Centre To Be ReplacedEast Gippsland Shire Council is set to replace the Paynesville Community Centre building. By East Gippsland Shire Council - 9th February 2007 - Back to News The building has been dogged by problems and possible options have been explored following the closure of the childcare section in August last year.
Councillors made the decision following advice from geotechnical consultants Golder Associates Pty Ltd who say the building will continue to settle and that replacement is the most viable course of action.
It was also decided that a further report should be presented to Council by the end of April advising whether there is a more suitable site for a replacement building away from Gilsenan Reserve.
Mayor Cr Mendy Urie said Council would budget for an amount of $1,400,000 for the work spread over the 2007/08 and 2008/09 financial years.
The Community Centre was built during 2000/2001 and since construction has experienced continuous movement.
In 2005 a study found that it had settled between 55 mm and 241 mm and a report recommended ongoing monitoring and a geotechnical investigation. .
Tests showed that beneath the building there was a mixture of soft materials, with solid ground being found between 10 and 16 metres below surface level.
Last year cracking in the walls resulted in the childcare section of the building being closed.
Cr Urie said Council had met with user groups to explain the situation and to help find locations for their activities.
"Council officers will work now closely with those affected to make sure venue changes happen smoothly and quickly," she said.
"We then need to determine when the new construction can be undertaken."
Councillors were advised that it would be at least 18 months before a new centre could be completed.
