Small business champions encourage others to go on-lineThe results of a small business survey, conducted recently throughout Latrobe City have highlighted possible gaps in the take up of e-commerce, which can now be addressed in order to improve efficiency and communication processes. By Latrobe City Council - 30th April 2003 - Back to News The results of a small business survey, conducted recently throughout Latrobe City have highlighted possible gaps in the take up of e-commerce, which can now be addressed in order to improve efficiency and communication processes.Investment Facilitator for Council’s economic development unit ‘Invest Latrobe’, Leo Billington, said that the survey was carried out as part of a joint Telstra Country Wide and Latrobe City Council e-commerce project,
"The project was developed and based on research that businesses evolve through six distinct stages in adopting e-commerce," Mr Billington explained.
"These stages start with buying a computer, and progress through using e-mail and the Internet for research; networking and integrating processes, creating a website, using the Internet interactivity to buy and sell products and services, through to automating business processes," Mr Billington explained.
"In order to close the knowledge gaps identified by the survey, a series of seminars will be conducted later in the year using businesses that have been identified as ‘champions’ of e-commerce.
One such ‘champion’ is Ronnie White, owner of Traralgon-based business, Gippsland Radiators. Mr White services a growing clientele with radiator problems throughout Latrobe City and Gippsland. But it is Ronnie’s approach to e-commerce that is beginning to make its mark.
"I find the technology is very useful for Internet banking, preparation of my BAS statements, and especially keeping track of GST at the end of every month," Mr White explained.
Gippsland Radiators is one of the hundred or so franchised NATRAD outlets throughout Australia, and was established over twenty years ago.
"When I took over the business two years ago, I was keen to use technology that is relevant for my specific business needs. In addition to banking and BAS statements, I record all debtor and creditor accounts as well as tracking the ageing accounts," Mr White said.
"I use the available software for my specific needs, and in the future there will be an opportunity for all NATRAD franchises to be on-line. This will enable me to quickly order from NATRAD’s manufacturing plant in Noble Park, therefore keeping my inventory costs to a minimum," Mr White said.
According to Telstra Country Wide Gippsland Area Manager, Peter Ward, these ‘champions’ have been invited to explain to others, all the advantages of e-commerce and just how it will advance business opportunities.
"Identification of skill gaps will enable us to strategically target the lessons of e-commerce therefore enhancing everyone’s confidence to use their computer more effectively in business," Mr Ward explained.
"I was only too pleased to participate in the survey," Mr White added. "I know computers are now a vital part of being in small business and my knowledge has been a real advantage in carefully watching the all important bottom-line," Mr White concluded.
