The new extension to the Wonthaggi and District Historical Society’s museum, located on the site of Wonthaggi’s railway station in Apex Park, was officially opened on Wednesday. The extension, dubbed ‘The West Wing’, includes administration and storage facilities, an accessible toilet and kitchenette, a new passage with a direct link to the original station building and energy efficient lighting throughout.

Bass Coast Shire Council contributed $200,000 to the project, while the Historical Society provided in-kind support, as well as a contribution of around $80,000. Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari, said this project is a perfect example of staying the course, planning well and achieving together.

"What a difference this extension will make to the Society, who need space to sort, store and exhibit the never-ending stream of items they collect from the community," Cr Tessari said.

Volunteers preserving town heritage

Cr Tessari concluded that, "The Museum is filled with history that you can see and also so much that you can’t see. The Society is such an important group in our town, conserving and promoting our history through education, events and community activities."

"The Society has the most incredible volunteers and the work they do to preserve our town’s heritage and the incredible sacrifices made by so many is inspiring. This particular project is dear to me, given my family’s deep connection to Wonthaggi, but also because of my friendship with so many of the dedicated and amazing volunteers of the Wonthaggi and District Historical Society."

Comfortable and excellent meeting space

President of Wonthaggi and District Historical Society Fay Quilford is thrilled with the extension, which allows for a dedicated museum space in the original railway station building, built in 1912. "This area now looks like and presents as a museum. The original features of the building, such as the pressed tin ceilings, ticket windows and parcel delivery area are clearly visible."

"The West Wing space provides a comfortable area for volunteers to undertake their duties in cataloguing, restoring, displaying and storing the Society’s collection - plus it is an excellent meeting space." Ms Quilford said.

Acknowledging the support for the Society

"The Wonthaggi and District Historical Society wishes to acknowledge and thank the Mayor Cr Brett Tessari together with present and past councillors and current Bass Coast Shire employees for their support. We also acknowledge the excellent work undertaken by TS Constructions and DB Designs. Finally, we thank our members for their hard work."
