Note new 40km/h speed limits outside schools

Wellington Shire Council is urging motorists to help make our roads safer for children by ensuring they comply with new 40km/h speed limits currently being introduced by VicRoads outside many schools.

By Wellington Shire Council - 15th March 2004 - Back to News

These new, lower limits apply at all times outside schools on 50km/h roads. They are being introduced as part of the Victorian Government’s $23 million arrive alive! School Speed Zones Program, which is being rolled-out state-wide.

The full range of speed changes to note outside schools are:

Current zone speed limit

New speed limit

50km/h

40km/h at all times

60km/h and 70km/h

40km/h at peak times (8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on schooldays).

60km/h or 70km/h, where appropriate, at all other times.

80km/h, 90km/h and 100km/h

60km/h at peak times (8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on schooldays)

80km/h, 90km/h or 100km/h, where appropriate, at all other times.

Note - Electronic variable signs will be used on roads that carry more than 500 vehicles per day. Time based 40km/h limits will apply at flagged school crossings on roads outside schools.

These new speeds apply with immediate effect once the relevant signage has been installed, and are being introduced outside some 40 primary and secondary schools across the shire.

The state-wide initiative is aiming to cut the road toll outside schools by 20 percent by 2007, with the new speeds being introduced across the state in phases, and all due to be in place by this November.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "Protecting the safety of our youngest residents is a top priority. Many people have been lobbying for these reduced speed limits for several years, so we very much welcome VicRoads' action".
