Tattersalls Cup 2004 – Tour of Latrobe CityOne hundred and twenty cyclists will ride through Latrobe City on Wednesday 4 August as part of the Tattersalls Cup Cycling Tour. By Latrobe Shire Council - 30th July 2004 - Back to News The Tour of Latrobe City is part two of the prestigious cycling event, with some of the country’s top cyclists competing.
The Tattersalls Cup is a series of one-day cycling events, staged every Wednesday over a period of five weeks and is a selection trial for the Herald Sun Tour.
Latrobe City Marketing and Communications Manager, Grantley Switzer, said that for the Tour of Latrobe City the cyclists will compete on a scenic course that combines hill climbs and sprints.
"Latrobe City was very fortunate to be selected as a race venue for this year’s Tattersalls Cup and as a result many people have worked hard to ensure that this stage is an exciting and challenging ride that highlights Latrobe’s diverse environment," Mr Switzer said.
"The event will commence at 10am from the Royal Exchange Hotel Car Park in Traralgon and cyclists will undertake a 125 kilometre course that travels through Traralgon, Glengarry, Toongabbie, Tyers, Yallourn North, Coalville, Narracan, Yinnar and Churchill," Mr Switzer added.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that he is proud that Council is a sponsor of the Tattersalls Cup and excited about the significant role Latrobe City is playing in promoting cycling throughout Victoria.
"In previous years, many dedicated cyclists from Latrobe have taken part in both the Tattersalls Cup and the Herald Sun Tour, and it is wonderful that Latrobe has the opportunity to be featured in one of these events. The Tour of Latrobe City will demonstrate the wide range of courses and beautiful scenic tracks that Latrobe has to offer, and I am sure that this, combined with the presence of elite riders competing in the municipality, will encourage more people to take up cycling in Latrobe, either as a leisure activity or as competition sport," Cr White said.
"The Tattersalls Cup is an ideal lead up to final stage of the Herald Sun Tour which will be held in Traralgon on 24 October. These are two significant events and it is a reflection of the attractiveness of our region and the capabilities within the municipality that the organisers and athletes of these events want to hold the events here," Cr White concluded.
The Tattersalls Cup commences on Wednesday 4 August in Traralgon at 10am. Competitors are scheduled to ride through Glengarry at 10.15am, Toongabbie at 10.30am, Tyers at 11am, Yinnar at 12.20pm, and conclude the race in Churchill at 1pm.
