Bemm River Water Treatment Plant Opens

Monday 14 May sees the official opening of East Gippsland Water’s eagerly awaited new Bemm River Water Treatment Plant

By East Gippsland Water - 24th May 2007 - Back to News

– the first of four plants opening this year to provide the region’s smaller communities with consistently high quality drinking water supplies.

The $1.4 million Bemm River facility is designed to treat and improve on what has historically been a variable quality of water supplying properties in the township.

Water treatment plants are also due to be up and running at Buchan, Cann River and Swifts Creek before the end of June.

All are built to a similar design, with full treatment of ‘raw’ water carried out by a Dissolved Air Flotation/Filtration Process, more commonly referred to as the DAFF water treatment process.

A coagulant is first added to the water to attract colour and dirt particles. These particles stick to air bubbles injected into the water and float to the surface where they are skimmed off as sludge.

The water next passes through a dual filter of sand and anthracite to further remove impurities. Finally, before entering the reticulation system and being supplied to township properties, it is disinfected.

The official opening of the Bemm River plant is being carried out by Chairperson for East Gippsland Water, Robert Fordham, who said: "The significant capital expenditure involved here reflects our ongoing commitment to ensure high quality drinking water for all our customers, no matter whether they live in large or small communities.

"This Water Treatment Plant will benefit some 100 properties, as well as the many tourists who flock to the popular destination of Bemm River every year."

As part of its ongoing commitment to boost services for smaller communities, East Gippsland Water has also extended sewerage services to Cann River and Bruthen over recent years. In addition, residents of Nowa Nowa are set to reap the benefits of new, improved drinking water once a new pipeline connecting the community with Toorloo Reservoir at Lakes Entrance is brought into operation.
