Latrobe Climate Change Committee Members SoughtExpressions of interest are being sought for membership of the Latrobe City ‘Climate Change Consultative Committee’. By Latrobe City - 16th January 2009 - Back to News Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the role of the climate change consultative committee will be to promote the activities and leadership displayed in Latrobe City in addressing climate change. "It will act as an advocate and sounding board for the community and other stakeholders, bringing to the attention of Latrobe City any issues of concern regarding the response to climate change," Cr Price explained.
"The committee will act as a channel of communication between the community, stakeholders and Latrobe City Council. It will review initiatives and activities including reports, investigations and studies into climate change; and provide advice to the Latrobe City community in relation to the climate change challenge."
Cr Price said climate change is a key challenge for all of us. "While some impacts related to climate change will be quite evident and possibly obvious, other aspects may only be realised as they begin to have a direct impact on our community. At no time in history have we seen such an emphasis of the links between healthy and viable ecosystems and the standard of living we currently enjoy.
"The development of a committee focused on the impacts of climate change at a local level is timely, as the world community emphasises the ‘think globally, act locally’ aspects of ecologically sustainable development," Cr Price said.
"Many organisations and individuals are acting in response to climate change issues. All indications are that the effects will be far reaching and encompass areas such as resource availability, economic wealth and growth, social wealth and wellbeing, environmental sustainability and current infrastructure," Cr Price said.
"An overview of what is actually being planned or developed at a local and regional level is paramount to ensuring the community is in a state of knowledge and preparedness."
Cr Price said that as at September 2008, Latrobe City Council had reduced its corporate greenhouse gas emissions by 20.5% compared to its 1998 emissions. "That reduction is an indication that we take our responsibilities seriously," Cr Price said.
"Latrobe City Council has recently adopted the comprehensive Natural Environment Sustainability Strategy 2008–2013 which includes a number of actions relating to the challenges likely to arise when considering climate.
"One of those actions is to establish a climate change consultative committee to help guide preparedness and the most sustainable way forward."
An expression of interest form for those interested in being members of the committee is available from Latrobe City service centres in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon; from council’s website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au; or from Matthew Peake at Latrobe City Council, telephone 1300 367 700.
Completed expressions of interest should be forwarded to ‘Climate Change Consultative Committee’, C/- Matthew Peake, Latrobe City Council, PO Box 264, Morwell 3840, prior to Monday 16 February 2009.
The committee will report to council each year on its overall operations and achievements.
