Senator Coonan Announces Bass Coast BroadbandSenator Helen Coonan, Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts visited Bass Coast last week. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 2nd November 2007 - Back to News Accompanied by Russell Broadbent MP, Federal Member for McMillan, the Senator announced 12 exchanges to be upgraded to ADSL as part of the Federal Government’s Australia Connected plan. This will increase broadband coverage for the area.
The exchanges located at Lance Creek, Kongwak, Outrim and Tarwin Lower will increase the broadband coverage of Bass Coast residents.
In addition, exhanges at Inverloch and Wonthaggi will be upgraded. This means their broadband capability will move from basic ADSL to very fast ADSL2 (up to 20 Mbps).
Wireless broadband sites, with a capacity of 12 Mbps, will be built at Cape Paterson, Inverloch and Wonthaggi.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin welcomed the announcement.
"Having fast broadband access and good coverage is very important for people in regional areas," said Cr Goodwin.
"Our businesses need this to be able to grow and remain competitive.
"Council’s own research has identified that we need to attract global workers to this area," contined Cr Goodwin.
"Without good tele-communications, this is very difficult to achieve."
The Senator was a guest at a special function in the Council Chambers, attended by representatives from local businesses and members of the arts community.
Wendy Crellin, President of the Rescue Station Committee took the opportunity to make a brief presentation to the Senator, outlining the history of the Rescue Station. The Rescue Station is hoping to secure federal funding to continue developing the project.
