Rocco ‘Rocky’ Mattioli Accepts Plaque For Hall Of Fame Rocco ‘Rocky’ Mattioli accepted his induction plaque to Latrobe City’s Sporting Hall of Fame at Latrobe Leisure Morwell on Wednesday. The presentation was made by Latrobe City councillor, Darrell White. By Latrobe City - 27th August 2008 - Back to News Mr Mattioli was unable to accept his plaque personally when he was inducted into the hall of fame two years ago, but he is currently visiting family in the Latrobe Valley.
Mr Mattioli was born in Italy and immigrated with his family to Morwell at the age of five. He started his amateur boxing career at the age of 13 under the guidance of Stan Mounsey, in an old shed next to the Morwell RSL. At age 16, Mr Mattioli’s won the Victorian Amateur Championships Title and he also finished runner up at the national championships in 1969.
The following year Mr Mattioli turned to professional boxing which saw him move to Melbourne where he worked with Ambrose Palmer. From there his career blossomed further and several years later Mr Mattioli teamed up with Oscar Minari. This partnership saw Mr Mattioli win the Australian Welterweight title and WBC (World Boxing Council) Light Middleweight title three times.
During his career Mr Mattioli fought 74 matches from which he only lost seven and drew two. He was inducted into the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame in October 2004.
At the presentation ceremony, Cr White congratulated Mr Mattioli on a luminous boxing career.
"On behalf of the councillors and residents of Latrobe City, I present Mr Mattioli with this plaque to officially welcome into our own Sporting Hall of Fame. He is a worthy inductee, with a long and prodigious career in his chosen sport. His many title winning bouts made him an easy choice for the honour roll and it is with great pleasure that we can congratulate him in person for his achievements," Cr White said.
Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that Mr Mattioli’s acceptance was extremely timely given that this year will see the induction of two more members and two more legends into the Latrobe City Sporting Hall of Fame.
"The inductees will be announced at a presentation function to be hosted on the weekend of the Herald Sun Tour opening stage in October to be held in Traralgon. The event will be a celebration recognising local sporting talent on the international stage," Cr Lougheed concluded.
