Nineteen young people from the ‘Young Leaders of Latrobe’ program and Latrobe City’s Youth Council, participated recently in the ‘National Young Leaders Day’ forum in Melbourne. National Young Leaders Day is an annual event held across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.

Latrobe City youth services officer, Chris Larsen, said that this year’s National Young Leaders Day gave 1500 young people from across Victoria the opportunity to learn about leadership in a unique way and aims to promote the value of inspirational and positive role models as examples to others.

"It did this by exposing students to a diverse range of leaders and their views on leadership. At the forum, the guest speakers challenged the young people’s opinions and encouraged them to think outside the square," Chris revealed.

The day was hosted by 2004 Big Brother celebrity Wesley Dening. The guest speakers included Australian Para-Olympian gold-medallist Katrina Webb; Drew Ginn a member of Australia's popular ‘Oarsome Foursome’ rowing team; and the founder of BOOST Juice bars Janine Allis.

"Katrina Webb spoke of her experiences at the Australian Institute of Sport, the time when she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and the feeling of wining gold in the Athens 2004 Para-Olympic Games. Katrina’s words of encouragement to the young people were ‘follow your dreams’, ‘everyone has the potential to do great things’ and ‘don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not good enough or that you can’t do something’.

"All of the speakers on the day talked about the journey being more important than the destination. Katrina Webb and Drew Ginn paid particular attention to this point and they said that it is important for the young people to understand that process equals outcome and that if the process is good the outcome will be even better," Chris said.

"Drew’s journey illustrated his comments well, as after winning gold at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, he was forced to withdraw from the Sydney 2000 Olympics due to a back injury, but then went on to again win gold at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

"The final message conveyed to the young people on the day was ‘A great leader does not always know everything or have the answers; however a good leader will try and put everything together to achieve the best possible outcome’," Chris concluded.
