Bass Coast Provides Opportunities For Local Students

Students discuss the careers available in local government

By Carol McCormack - 8th August 2002 - Back to News

Showing local students local career opportunities was the focus of a display by Bass Coast Shire Council at a recent careers fair at Monash University’s Churchill campus.

Two members of staff attended the fair and talked to students about the careers available in local government.

"Often people are surprised by the diversity of careers in local government," said Kate Spall, Human Resources Officer with Bass Coast Shire Council. "Whether you’re studying engineering or arts, nursing or commerce, there are careers available for almost every discipline."

Kate said that Council believes it is important to promote these opportunities to local students. Recent ABS statistics show that across Gippsland the 15-24 years old age bracket had the lowest population.

"Anecdotally, it has been suggested that young people move away to study or to find work," said Kate Spall. "We’re keen to help young people realise that there are opportunities right here at home."

The careers fair held at Monash’s Churchill campus attracted many local employers including other councils, VicRoads and South Gippsland Water.

"Another way that we’re offering opportunities to local students is by participating in the Monash Gippsland Internship Program," said Kate.

The Program links first year students at Monash Gippsland with a specific local business in the student’s field of study for the duration of their degree. Businesses select and sponsor high achieving VCE students who choose to study an undergraduate degree course at Monash’s Gippsland Campus.

"2002 was the first year of the program and Council sponsored a student who is interested in a business and accounting career," explained Kate. "Jessica Barker is a first year Bachelor of Business and Commerce student at Monash and works one day per week in Council’s finance section."

"There are many benefits for both the employer and the student," said Kate. "I would encourage local year 12 students to look into the program and see how it can help them."
