Fees For Waste DisposalWaste Transfer and Recycling Centres across Bass Coast no longer offer a free waste disposal service. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 11th September 2009 - Back to News In the past, residents were able to dispose of up to two 70 litre bags or a 120 litre bin of waste per week at no cost. From 1 September 2009, fees of $2 and $4 respectively will apply to all bags and bins of waste.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steven Piasente, said the change was due to signficiant increases in the costs associated with processing waste.
"Council has a range of contracts in place for our Waste Management Services," explained Mr Piasente.
"The new recycling contract came into effect from February 2009 and while this means we are able to offer a higher level of service such as additional recycling and the Rhyll and Wonthaggi Transfer sations operating seven days per week, there has also been an increase in the costs of waste management services.
"As a result, fees have been introduced in a range of areas."
From 1 September 2009 the following fees apply at all Waste Transfer and Recycling Centres:
· Bags up to 70 litres in capacity - $2
· 120 litre bin - $4
The free disposal of small quantities of waste was previously funded by those landowners paying the annual garbage charge.
"Introducing a fee for waste disposal provides an added incentive for property owners to increase recycling efforts," said Mr Piasente.
"The disposal of separated recyclables will still be free of charge."
Council also has retained the green waste amnesty period during Novemeber and early December when residents can dispose of green waste free of charge to help prepare for the fire danger period.
Details of the new fees and changes to Waste Management Services, including hard rubbish and recycling, are available on Council’s website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au or by calling 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
