Footpath maintenance takes another step forwardLatrobe City’s footpath maintenance program has taken another step forward with the recent commencement of the second part of the $1.7 million project. By Latrobe City Council - 8th November 2006 - Back to News Stage-two works tackle repairs and reinstatement of damaged footpaths within medium and low-priority zoned areas.
The second stage of the program is now being delivered at the same time as high-priority repair and replacement works which started in Traralgon in May, and are now nearing their completion in Morwell. Work on the higher priority maintenance work is anticipated to begin in Moe and Newborough next week, with further works to follow in Churchill, Yinnar, Glengarry and Toongabbie.
Higher priority has been given to areas where there is greater pedestrian traffic such as in commercial zones, near schools or aged care facilities.
Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Lisa Price, said the remedial works are part of a major rehabilitation program designed to improve the safety and comfort of pedestrian users. "In all, many thousands of square metres of footpaths and pram crossings are being rehabilitated by grinding the footpath level where appropriate or by being replaced entirely," Cr Price said.
The completion of high-priority zoned project work is expected by January 2007; with works allocated through stage-two completed by June 2007.
"Pedestrians are already enjoying the benefits of the footpath rehabilitation program. Those walking, pushing prams, riding mobility scooters or cycling along cycle paths will find their journeys have been made more comfortable by the works that have been carried out," Cr Price said.
"It’s important that we continue to invest in the maintenance of a safe and well-kept footpath network to enhance the liveability and sustainability of the municipality," Cr Price added.
