Leisure Centre Feasibility Study OutThe Wonthaggi Aquatic and Leisure Centre (WALC) feasibility study has been released to the community for comment this week. By Bass Coast - 18th March 2011 - Back to News According to Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Steve Piasente, the centre has been identified as the regional facility for the Shire.
"The centre was built in 1979," said Mr Piasente. "This makes it over 30 years old with the only major works being an upgrade to the change rooms, re-tiling of the pool and improvements to the roof and ventilation.
"The study identifies that the centre is at capacity and is no longer meeting the needs of the Bass Coast Community," continued Mr Piasente.
It also identifies that:
- Learn to swim classes are at capacity
- The current pool is not accessible to all members of the community
- A warm water space for rehabilitation, toddler and older adult classes is needed
- Creche and occasional care facilities are in demand but are currently not available
- Clubs based at the centre require more lanes and water space.
Mr Piasente said the feasibility study proposed a staged development of the centre to address issues raised by users.
"The feasibility study will now be available on our website and at Customer Service Centres from 21 March until 13 May for public comment and feedback," said Mr Piasente.
"We will then make any changes to the plan before presenting it to the June Council Meeting for Council’s adoption
"This will then allow us to investigate funding options in order to progress the project," continued Mr Piasente.
The feasibility study is available at all Council Customer Service centres or online at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au. Feedback on the study is open until 13 May and should be addressed to Chief Executive Officer, Bass Coast Shire Council, PO Box 118, Wonthaggi, 3995.
