Bass Coast SafeRoads Working Group would like to remind all road users to take care on local roads and be aware of children going to school

Now that school’s back in the full swing, the members of the Bass Coast SafeRoads Working Group would like to remind all road users to take care on local roads and be aware of children going to school, especially cyclists and pedestrians.

"Slowing down in high activity areas such as shops, entertainment venues and schools is the most immediate way to reduce the risk to pedestrians," said Cr John Gains, who chairs the Safe Roads Working Group. "It’s important the motorists observe the 40 km/h speed limits near schools and the 50 km/h speed limits in all residential areas."

According to research conducted by Monash University, the introduction of the 50 km/h speed limit in residential areas has shown a 40% reduction in crashes where a pedestrian was killed or injured.

A pedestrian struck at 60 km/h has little chance of survival. The chance of survival at 40 km/h is 80%.

"The Group would also like to remind parents to ensure their children always wear helmets when cycling, and that they educate their kids to use the designated crossings," said Cr Gains.
