Council joins Christmas card recycling effortThe cards and envelopes are pulped and recycled to make new products By East Gippsland Shire News - 6th January 2003 - Back to News East Gippsland Shire Council is encouraging residents to recycle the thousands of Christmas cards received this festive season.
Any type of greeting card, from homes or business, will be accepted at Coles Supermarkets or Australia Post outlets for distribution to Planet Ark's Environmental Foundation.
The process is simple. Residents can pick up a free postage paid recycling envelope from Australia Post outlets, put their cards inside and post them free at any post box or at Coles Supermarket.
One million recycling envelopes Australia-wide have been produced for the campaign, made from recycled paper and milk cartons.
"This is an excellent initiative of Planet Ark and it's pleasing to see major companies such as Australia Post and Coles involved," said Shire Waste Management Coordinator, Katie Zagami.
"East Gippsland residents can drop off their envelopes at Bairnsdale's Coles Supermarket and place their cards in the special in-store Planet Ark recycling bins, or at any post box.
"People can continue to drop off their envelopes until the end of February.
"Traditionally, Christmas cards in the home come down on 6 January, so we're urging East Gippslanders to recycle them.
"Since 'Cards 4 Planet Ark' was introduced over nine years ago, over 430 million greeting cards have been recycled. The cards and envelopes are pulped and recycled to make new products," Katie said.
