Sod turning marks $2.5 million funding success for Rosedale Community Centre

Wellington Shire Council has today (29 April) celebrated reaching the $2.5 million funding target for the much-needed new Rosedale Multipurpose Community Centre - hosting a sod turning ceremony on the site of the facility.

By Wellington Shire Council - 29th April 2005 - Back to News

The joint turning of the first sod was carried out by the Hon Peter McGauran, Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs and Federal Member for Gippsland, and the State Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins - on behalf of the Hon John Thwaites MP, Minister for Victorian Communities. Amongst those also attending was Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault.

Comprehensive lobbying by Wellington Shire Council on the local community’s behalf has won substantial funding for the project from the various spheres of government. The Victorian Government’s contribution of $1 million comprises $300,000 in Community Support Grant funding, $250,000 from the Department of Human Services Children’s Services, $200,000 from the Small Towns Program and $250,000 announced most recently under the Living Libraries Program

The Federal Government has provided $750,000 through its Regional Solutions and Regions Partnerships Programs, while Wellington Shire Council has contributed $680,000, Central Gippsland Health Service has committed $80,000 for the community health element of the project and the local community has raised some $20,000.

It means that construction work on the new complex is all set to start in June, with completion due autumn 2006.

The Rosedale Multipurpose Community Centre will boast provision for occasional care and pre-school, a library, neighbourhood house and community health services, as well as facilities for local senior citizens and other community groups.

It means that for the first time the people of Rosedale will be able to benefit from all these services under one roof – providing much more convenient access to broader range of community support.

Said Mayor Gault: "We can now look forward to construction work moving into full swing over the coming weeks on this eagerly awaited and much needed new centre. This is a fantastic outcome for Rosedale and owes much to the hard work and commitment of everyone involved including the Rosedale community itself, local parliamentarians and council officers who pulled this complex initiative together."
