Bass Coast Stars Shine

It was definitely a night to remember when Bass Coast hit the big screen at the premiere launch, A Night with our Stars.

Celebrating the release of nine short documentaries filmed by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (AMCI), the local community flocked to the Wonthaggi Union Cinema on Friday, 2 March. Friends and families of those featured in the films, producers from ACMI, Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Veronica Dowman and Council staff joined in the festivities.

Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said the documentaries were a wonderful testament to the achievements of the local community

"The documentaries were filmed across Bass Coast and celebrate the local community spirit. It is a real acknowledgement of some of our quiet achievers and showcases the projects and talents of the people of Bass Coast."

The event was launched by the Mayor, Cr Veronica Dowman and included a presentation by ACMI producers Kim Montgomery and Csilla Csongvay.

Mr Piasente praised the efforts of Council’s Community Strengthening team who put the launch night together.

"The hard work of our staff really paid off and everyone who came along got a red carpet experience with a real old-fashioned movie feel, including popcorn, choc tops and jaffas! There were shots from the documentaries in the foyer, as well as displays from some of the groups actually involved," said Mr Piasente.

"I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Chabrelle Chisholm, Berni Murphy and their team in making this night such a success."

The mini-documentaries are part of ACMI’s regional filming program, which aims to capture local identity. Two crews from ACMI filmed at several Bass Coast locations in December 2011 and interviewed a range of local community members to document their stories.

Copies of the full set of documentaries can also be purchased by registering with Council. If you would like to purchase a DVD (for the production cost of $5.00), please email communityplanningteam@basscoast.vic.gov.au or phone Lisa Pettinella on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).

The mini-documentaries will be part of ACMI’s archive collection and will be viewable on the ACMI website at www.acmi.net.au from April.

The nine Bass Coast documentaries are:

Life in the Waves: A story about mate-ship, keeping it local and living the surfing lifestyle dream, featuring Sandy Ryan and Island Surfboards.

The Ripple and The Shed: Inverloch’s Clock Tower Committee and Historical Society joined forces to create a maritime precinct along the town’s foreshore.

Following their Footsteps: Barrie Stewart and the dedicated members of the Kernot-Grantville CFA.

Settlement Soccer Club: Connecting with others and breaking down boundaries with the international language of the beautiful game.

The Corinella Jetty: Barbara Oates rallied the community to raise $25,000 to renovate and extend the iconic jetty.

Community Banking Bass Coast: Local hardware store owner, Terry Ashenden pulled together a committee of residents and business owners to create a community bank in San Remo.

Swell Mamas: Dozens of mums across Inverloch get together every Friday morning to connect, laugh, share and take to the waves.

The Bass Valley Community Centre: Over thirty years ago, Clare Le Serve started a craft group for young mum. The Centre has now grown into an amazing community asset.

DAK (David Alexander Kopelman): DAK doesn’t consider himself an artist: he just ‘dabbles and makes stuff’. His scrap-metal sculptures can be seen in homes, businesses and galleries across Bass Coast.
