Yallourn North Preschool Unveils Kids – ‘Go For Your Life’ SignYallourn North preschool has achieved the Kids – ‘Go for your life’ award and celebrated the unveiling of the sign by holding a healthy morning tea for parents, Latrobe City’s children’s services officers and Latrobe Community Health Service members. By Latrobe City Council - 24th November 2009 - Back to News Latrobe City’s children’s services coordinator – preschools, Ronda Bruerton, said that on the day of the unveiling, the children walked, rode or scootered to kinder to help celebrate the achievement in the spirit of the award.
"The ‘Stride and Ride’ component of the program has been great for the students, many of whom now either walk to kinder with a parent or even ride their bike or scooter.
"The children are really enjoying the changes we have made and are especially excited about the Kids – ‘Go for your life’ award; they feel they’ve achieved something," Ms Bruerton said.
"To promote an active lifestyle, Yallourn North Preschool held a walkathon earlier in the year, which involved the children seeing how many laps of the playground they could do, and the preschool has also purchased bicycles for use during lunch and outdoor play time.
"There is a new climbing wall for the children that they love to play on, and combined with the new bicycles we have noticed a real change in the amount of exercise the children are getting during the day," Ms Bruerton said.
Latrobe City councillor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said that it was a fantastic achievement by the preschool staff, parents, committee and, of course, the children to receive a Kids – ‘Go for your life’ award.
"This is recognition that the Yallourn North preschool has made healthy eating and physical activity a priority. They may be small changes but they that are making a big difference. The messages within the scheme, such as ‘Tap into Water Everyday’ ‘Plant Fruit and Veg in your Lunchbox’ and ‘Turn Off, Switch to Play’ promote healthy eating and physical activity at an early age which could be the key to maintaining and improving the health of our children," Cr Lougheed said.
Dr Suzy Honisett, Manager, Kids – ‘Go for your life’ said that early childhood services and primary schools across Victoria have really embraced the program.
"Seeing first-hand the changes being made to promote healthy eating and active play, and how they are welcomed by the staff at the service or school, the kids and their parents, is very rewarding," Dr Honisett said.
Kids – ‘Go for your life’ is managed by Diabetes Australia – Vic and Cancer Council Victoria, and is funded by the Victorian Government. For more information on the Kids – ‘Go for your life’ award program visit www.goforyourlife.vic.gov.au/kids or call 1300 739 899.
