Being Fire Ready Makes SenseFire Ready Victoria meetings are being held in Bass Coast to help property owners and their families prepare for bushfires. Bass Coast Shire Council’s Emergency Management Coordinator, By Bass Coast - 22nd December 2011 - Back to News James Bremner, said the free, one hour information sessions run by the Country Fire Authority are an important way for community members to understand and prepare for the fire risk in their township.
"Sessions are scheduled for Harmers Haven, Cape Paterson, Newhaven, Jam Jerrup and Cape Woolamai in late December and early January.
"The topics covered include very practical matters such as what the Fire Danger Ratings and Warnings mean, personal safety and how to survive a bushfire."
Mr Bremner said though developing a Bushfire Survival Plan can seem overwhelming, it is essential. By attending the Fire Ready Victoria meeings, people can get advice from experts about how to put their plan together and what programs and resources are available to help them.
"It is also an opportunity to ask questions about individual situations, such as; ‘How will I know when to leave? Where should I go? How will I get there?’," Mr Bremner said. Meeting details are as follows:
- Harmers Haven Wednesday, 28 December 2011 3.00pm Oleria St Carpark
- Cape Paterson Wednesday, 28 December 2011 6.00pm Cape Paterson Community Centre
- Newhaven Wednesday, 4 January 2012 7.00pm Phillip Island Caravan Park, 24 Old Bridge Dr
- Jam Jerrup Saturday, 7 January 2012 10.00am Foreshore Rd Carpark
- Cape Woolamai Saturday, 7 January 2012 1.00pm The Rotunda at the end of Cottosloe Ave
The Country Fire Authority is also holding a Bushfire Planning Workshop for community members living in Grantville, The Gurdies and surrounds, at the Granville Hall on Wednesday, 11 January 2012, at 6.30pm.
"The workshop is designed to complement Fire Ready Victoria meetings and information contained in the Fire Ready Kit," Mr Bremner said. These sessions provide more practical assistance to help develop Bushfire Survival Plans." Please register your details with the CFA on (03) 9767 1800 to book a place at the workshop.
