Progress Highlighted In Traralgon Creek Improvement

The first review meeting of the Traralgon Creek Neighbourhood Environment Improvement Plan (NEIP) was held on Wednesday 11 April and highlighted progress made on a number of actions included in the plan.

One of the main objectives of the NEIP is to improve the environment and water flow and quality of Traralgon Creek.

The plan, which was approved by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) in November last year, was developed by a steering committee made up of representatives from Latrobe City, government agencies, power companies, the forestry industry, landowners, environmental groups and community representatives.

Latrobe City’s NEIP officer, Mike Answerth, said that the plan was acknowledged for its level of community consultation and grass roots input.

"We are delighted that action undertaken over the past 12 months on various activities designed to improve the environment of the Traralgon Creek has been started and in some cases completed.

"For example, the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (WGCMA) reported considerable progress over the past twelve months, including the removal of 17 kilometres of willows from Traralgon Creek and the completion of 24 kilometres of fencing and revegetation of the stream zone.

"The WGCMA also agreed to install two additional fishing platforms in the urban area of Traralgon and these are currently under construction," Mr Answerth explained.

"Further, work on the redesign and restoration of the Queen’s Parade wetland, proposed in the plan, had progressed following the securing of a Community Water Grant of $37,000 from the Commonwealth Government," Mr Answerth said.

"The first phase of a $30,000 three-year commitment by Grand Ridge Plantations, to a blackberry and weed spraying program in the upper area of the creek near Leroy, has also been completed.

Mr Answerth also reported that Latrobe City had undertaken to extend walking paths along the creek by two kilometres by working in conjunction with subdivision developers and this has now been completed in the area north of Agnes Brereton Park.

"One of the targets in the plan that is still to be achieved is the formation of a ‘Friends of Traralgon Creek’ group to work with council and the WGCMA as a volunteer group assisting with maintenance and improvement of the creek environs," Mr Answerth said.

"The steering committee noted that many community volunteer groups were already doing good work along the creek but thought that a friends group would provide an opportunity for other members of the community to become involved.

"Some of the activities that the friends group could become involved with include helping with tree planting days, undertaking clean up projects along the creek, and helping with water watch activities. These activities will contribute directly to the improvement of water quality and flow within Traralgon Creek.

"The steering committee is excited to report increased sightings of platypus along urban sections of the creek. The friends group could also be involved in activities to improve the habitat for the platypus to ensure that the platypus continue to call Traralgon Creek home. Details of how to become involved in the ‘Friends of Traralgon Creek’ will be announced shortly," Mr Answerth added.
