Grants Available For Outdoor Sport ShadeLocal sports club can receive up to $2500 to improve or develop shade areas. By Wellington Shire Council - 12th September 2003 - Back to News Wellington Shire Council is encouraging local clubs who are considering the purchase of portable shade items to apply for funding through the VicHealth Portable Shade For Sports Club Program.
The program is split into two regions – east and west Victoria – to ensure an equitable spread of funds.
Not-for-profit sports clubs and incorporated groups that offer sports activities during summer months (November to March inclusive) can apply for up to $2500 to purchase portable shade items.
Preference is given to junior sports clubs (up to 17 years of age) for shade items that meet relevant Australian Standards.
Council’s Recreation Development Officer Michael Rowell said the program made it easier for sports clubs to reduce the risks of ultraviolet radiation in summer sports.
"Providing shade is one way to reduce the risk for spectators and participants, and make participation more comfortable and more enjoyable," he said.
"The Portable Shade for Sports Clubs Grants Program aims to encourage increased participation in sporting activities by providing healthier sporting environments.
"Other modifications could include altering playing times to play outside 11am to 3pm and ensuring hats and long sleeve clothing is worn when not playing."
Only portable shade items will be funded through the program, with preference given to sporting clubs that cannot erect permanent shade structures, such as surf life saving and orienteering clubs.
Items that will be funded include knitted or mesh shade cloth, shade tents or marquees and sun umbrellas.
Applications must be lodged on the official VicHealth application form, which can be downloaded from the VicHealth website www.vichealth.gov.au or from Michael Rowell at Wellington Shire Council on 5142 3316.
