Shire Extends Free Green Waste Disposal

East Gippsland Shire Council has extended and expanded the opportunity for free green waste disposal as a result of the bushfires that are threatening Gippsland.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 12th December 2006 - Back to News

Green garden waste can now be taken to any Council disposal facility free of charge from this weekend (Saturday, 9 December) until and including the following weekend (Sunday, 17 December).

Mayor, Cr Mendy Urie said the situation with fires meant it was imperative that people minimised the risk to their properties.

"The situation is growing more and more serious and we must all do everything within our own power to protect our homes," she said.

"By getting rid of green waste that may now be dry and combustible we can help lessen the risks.

"I urge everyone in the community to have a clean up around the house and take any green waste that could burn to a council disposal facility.

"We should also think about neighbours and friends who may be elderly and who might need a hand."

Shire Waste management coordinator Megan Dennett said only uncontaminated loads would be accepted without charge.

Normal fees apply to logs over 300 mm diameter, other general wastes and contaminated material.
