Labor To Slash Its Own Red-Tape?

Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today it was laughable that the Bracks Government had released a policy aimed at reducing red tape.

By Phillip Davis - 13th July 2006 - Back to News

Mr Davis questioned the validity of such a policy, given the Bracks Government created the red tape itself.

"Since 1999, the Bracks Government has turned Victoria into the ‘nanny state’, introducing a ridiculous amount of rules and regulations," Mr Davis said.

"Thanks to the Bracks Government, permits must be obtained before letting children help out on the farm; before farmers can remove native vegetation to rip rabbit warrens; before using central pivot irrigation systems; and, before obtaining firewood – just to name a few.

"I’m sure all Victorians will now see the irony of the Treasurer John Brumby releasing a policy to cut his own red tape."

Mr Davis said red tape and regulation were among the most significant issues affecting country Victorians.

"Country Victorians and the Liberal Party have been telling the Bracks Government for two terms of Government that its regulation and red tape was costing small businesses billions each year.

"Bracks red tape has stifled investment, sent businesses to the wall and resulted in proposed developments moving interstate.

"Yet, just 20 weeks from an election, John Brumby finally has an epiphany and decides to cut red tape.

"I think all country Victorians will see this policy for what it is – a cynical attempt to win votes, particularly in the country."
