Immunisation Is Not Just For Infants

October is Immunisation Awareness month and Latrobe City Council is reminding residents that immunisations are not just for babies and young children.

By Latrobe City - 10th October 2007 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council’s manager health services Andrew Mackintosh said that all citizens aged 65 and over should get vaccinated against pneumococcal disease.

"The National Immunisation Program provides free pneumococcal vaccinations and these are recommended at 65 years of age with a booster dose to be given after five years.

"Adults over 65 years of age may have an impaired immune system which makes them more susceptible to potentially life threatening diseases such as pneumococcal disease. This disease can primarily cause pneumonia, middle ear infections, bloodstream infections and even meningitis," Mr Mackintosh explained.

"Illness from pneumococcal disease can be prevented through vaccination. In this day and age, there is no point in people suffering from preventable diseases," Mr Mackintosh added.

These vaccines are available free of charge through medical clinics. Further information can be sought by contacting your local medical clinic.

General enquiries in relation to adult and child immunisations, including session times, can be directed to the Latrobe City Council Health Services Team on 1300 367 700.
