Ollerton shared pathway nears completion

A new bicycle and pedestrian path skirting the Ollerton bushland reserve in Newborough is nearing completion, following recent works undertaken by Latrobe City contractors.

By Latrobe City Council - 19th May 2006 - Back to News

The new shared path will provide an all weather surface link between Ollerton Avenue and Crombe Court and provide access to Dinwoodie Drive communities via Shelton Street. The path also provides an important access into the Ollerton bushland reserve for local residents.

Councillor Tony Zimora said the completion of the works will provide a much needed all weather access to the Lowanna College precinct and local primary schools for students. "It will also help local residents access the sports centre and recreational facilities, and potentially assist the further development of the walking school bus," Cr Zimora said.

"Council has been working with the reserve committee of management to have the works completed at the earliest, since the state government funding for this principle bicycle route was first announced. It has been a great example of cooperation of council, the reserve committee and the local community working together to achieve a good outcome.

"The bushland reserve wins as there is now an established path for the public to use on the boundary of the reserve rather than ‘creating’ a number of dirt tracks through the bushland; and the public now has a link suitable for bicycles and mums with prams instead of tracks that became muddy after rain," Cr Zimora explained.

Creation of the new path also solves an escalating problem for local residents wanting to access the bushland reserve for their recreation. For many years some residents have accessed the reserve across vacant blocks in Crombe Court, technically trespassing over private land. However, a number of new homes constructed in the court, now blocks that access.

"Residents met with council last year to voice their concerns and it was explained to them that council would make it a priority to utilise a special purposes reserve opposite Shelton Street to provide a legal access. This path now delivers on that undertaking, providing a clearly designated access to the bushland reserve, while also creating a much needed link for local communities," Cr Zimora said.
