Council Contributes $100,000 To Indoor Sports Centre

East Gippsland Councillors have allocated $100,000 from the 2006-07 Capital Works Budget to the development of the proposed $1.4 million indoor sports centre on Shire land at the Lucknow Recreation Reserve.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 6th June 2007 - Back to News

The allocation was approved at last night’s Council Meeting and follows the receipt of pledges of up to $150,000 from the East Gippsland community and businesses by the appeal committee established for the project.

The Department for Victorian Communities has provided a further $250,000 for the project and a decision on an application for $700,000 under the Regional Partnerships Program of the Department of Transport and Regional Services is expected before the end of July.

The recent closing of a squash and racquetball centre in Bairnsdale and the imminent closure of the only remaining facility have resulted in the inclusion of six purpose built squash and racquetball courts in the new centre.

A flexible space for twelve table tennis tables that will also be suitable for carpet bowls will be included in the complex that will provide a shared kitchen, spectator seating, a small shop, office, storage facilities and upgraded car parking.

In a report tabled at the meeting Councillors were advised that preliminary discussions had been held with representatives of the Lucknow Recreation Reserve Committee of Management and the Bairnsdale and District Table Tennis Association Inc in relation to an appropriate management structure to support the growing number and variety of users that would be located on the Reserve land.

Councillors were also advised that the current Recreation Reserve Management Licence is due for renewal in the near future and it was appropriate to explore a management model based on a similar reserve arrangement at the Bairnsdale City Oval.

Mayor Cr Mendy Urie said she was pleased the Shire was supporting the planned new regional centre with a substantial cash contribution as well as the provision of the land on which it would be built.

"It is a high standard project that will cater for a wide range of community members and activities," she said.

"It will also provide top class facilities that will attract major events to the region."
