Latrobe City’s Performing Arts & Venues Co-ordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said that the aim of the Café Concert Series was to deliver a diverse range of interesting and entertaining, quality live musical experiences to our regional doorstep.

"Over the past few years the Café Concert Series has earned a reputation for providing regional audiences with a consistently high quality stream of entertainment for a very reasonable ticket price. The 2005 program is no exception.

"The year starts Sunday 20 February at the Tyers Hall with the ever so rare occurrence of a family of musicians live on stage together. The Baylor Brothers originally from the cool mountain air of Healesville, Victoria will come together to share a show ranging from hot swinging string band music, jazz songs, western swing, Cajun and country. Peter, Andy and Donal Baylor play a combination of guitar, mandolin, fiddle and will be accompanied on bass by Andrew Scott.

"Blue Drag is the next group to take the stage, again at Tyers on Sunday 1 May. Blue Drag are reminiscent of Django Reinhardt’s Hot Club jazz tradition and consist of Nigel Maclean on violin, Martin Elepans on guitar, John Scurry on rhythm guitar, Rob Mahony on double bass and the beautiful voice of Julie O’Hara. This superb combination of musicianship, synchronicity and musical taste results in a sublime live performance peppered with impeccable style and risk," Ms Roberts said.

"We celebrate the end of winter with the blues delivered by the expertise of the Nick Charles Trio on Sunday 4 September at Tyers. Nick Charles is an outstanding instrumentalist and an awesome fingerpicker. His repertoire covers blues, early jazz, ragtime, folk and country. He presents a shimmering combination of acoustic guitar styles with formidable technique that reveals the splendour of the music and never fails to astonish his listeners," Ms Roberts explained.

Ms Roberts added that the year would come to a close on Sunday 6 November at The Chapel in Morwell with the party style band The Band Who Knew Too Much.

"These guys are high energy, uplifting and sometimes tongue in cheek. They create fun music combining originals, roots, rockabilly and ska. The band features Dave Evans on accordion, Andy Reid on clarinet, Craig Fermanis on guitar, Shannon Birchall on double bass and Matt Earl on drums and percussion. It’s guaranteed to end the year on a festive note," Ms Roberts said.

The Café Concert Series is made possible by funding assistance from Arts Victoria and the Community Support Fund. Without this assistance ticket prices would be out of reach for many in the community.

"Take advantage of your taxes at work and get in early for the Earlybird Seasons Tickets which are being sold at the discounted price of $64 until 12 noon on Friday 24 December 2004.

Tickets are on sale now at Latrobe Performing Arts Box Office, telephone 5176 3559.
