Students experience real world outcomesProviding our young people with real-world learning opportunities is at the heart of Bass Coast Shire Council’s involvement in the Broadening Horizons Project. By Portal Admin - 5th December 2016 - Back to News Now in its third year, Broadening Horizons is an innovative learning program operating across Gippsland.
It sees employers and secondary schools working together to co-design and co-deliver units of work, with Council partnering with Korumburra Secondary College.
The students were keen to look at Council’s role in tourism and worked with Council’s Coordinator Tourism, Teresa Mahood, on their projects.
Last week the students visited Council offices in Wonthaggi to present their projects on "How to boost tourism during the winter months in Bass Coast".
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, said that the program increases the rate of positive outcomes for young people.
"Schools have the flexibility in their curriculums to achieve essential educational outcomes while incorporating the skills and attitudes needed in workplaces," Cr Rothfield said.
"What our students learn in the classroom can be connected in real-time to what outcomes are delivered in the workforce.
"At the same time, workplaces like Council have plenty they can gain from working with young people."
The program involves secondary schools partnering with one or two employers.
Their focus is to:
Link the world of work into students’ every day learning
Make the learning practical at year 7 and/or 8 levels
Provide learning time at both sites: workplace and classroom
Build a positive mindset for students
Engage parents and families into the learning to build aspiration, support and understanding
The Broadening Horizons Project was initiated by the Gippsland Regional Managers' Forum and the Department of Education and Training.
Korumburra Secondary College students did themselves proud when they presented their projects to Bass Coast Shire Council on how to boost tourism during the winter months in Bass Coast.
