The conference was part of the Gallery’s developing educational and public programs and included presentations by guest speakers, workshops and a gallery tour.

Latrobe Regional Gallery’s senior curator, Fiona West said that the exploration of visual art was an essential part of education and is one of the gallery’s priority areas.

"Education in visual art allows children and adults to explore new ideas, subject matter and cultures, and it is through the arts that students can broaden their perspectives and integrate life and learning in their worlds.

"For students studying languages, it is especially important, as art fosters an understanding of culture, spirituality and communication.

"Dr Jane Orton, Gippsland LOTE Project Officer, was the keynote speaker and presented an interesting and informative talk called ‘Gesture: the neglected essential in language use and learning’. Dr Orton explained that much of the communication we use is not verbal and this translates into the visual arts too.

"The teachers also had the opportunity to attend workshops and presentations on a variety of related subjects including ‘Effective LOTE Programs’ by Viviana Golding; and ‘Talking about Languages’ by Marlene Dingle and Viviana Golding, and ‘Enhancing Language Programs with Visual Imagery’ by the gallery’s Julie Rosewarne-Foster," Ms West explained.

Latrobe City’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said that using visual arts to enrich cultural understanding was a powerful tool.

"This conference was well-attended and LOTE teachers across the region can now share their learning with their students. Visual arts is a powerful medium through which to increase a student’s knowledge of language, culture and tradition. Many works of art create a lasting image in the mind, something to be discussed, offering a different perspective; all of which can be useful when learning another language," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
