Shire Steps Up Immunisation Efforts

East Gippsland Shire Council is renewing its efforts to have parents immunise their children and is joining other regional councils to stage Immunisation Week in October.

Immunisation Co-ordinator Vicki Wall said there was growing concern that the immunisation rates for four-year-olds was falling across the state

"It is very important that four year olds are given two vaccines to protect them against diptheria, tetanus, pertussis polio, measles, mumps and rubella," she said.

Ms Wall said statistics show that since Meningococcal C immunisation was introduced two years ago, some children between the ages of two and four have also missed this vaccination.

"We want to encourage parents to arrange for their child to have this at the same time," she said.

"It is important to have these vaccines at the fourth birthday for inclusion on their School Entry Immunisation Certificate.

"This is a legal requirement when enrolling a child for school and it is usually done by August of each year."

Ms Wall said certificates would show immunisation as incomplete if these boosters are delayed, and will subsequently complicate enrolment procedures for a child.

"The immunisation certificates are now issued centrally by the Australian Children’s Immunisation Register (ACIR)," she said.

"The advantage of this register is that your child’s immunisation records are accessible from anywhere in Australia when your child changes schools."

Vaccinations are free of charge, can be accessed through Shire Immunisation sessions and Vicki Wall can be reached for further information at the Shire office number 5153 9500.
