Royal Commission To Visit Latrobe Valley Individuals and organisations in the Latrobe Valley directly affected by the Victorian bushfires will be able to put forward their views at two local community meetings being run by the Royal Commission, By The Nationals’ Member for Morwell - 19th March 2009 - Back to News The Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe said today.
Mr Northe said the Royal Commission will visit Traralgon and Boolarra to determine the key local issues following the fires and to outline to locals the process of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.
"The Royal Commission will be conducting 23 consultations across13 fire-affected communities as it works to deliver an interim report by 17 August 2009 and a final report by 31 July 2010," Mr Northe said.
"I encourage all those in the Latrobe Valley who have been impacted by these tragic bushfires to register their attendance as soon as possible to ensure local issues are raised and adequately addressed through the Royal Commission.
Mr Northe said there have been a multitude of bushfire-related concerns and questions raised through his office.
"Issues brought to my attention include the bushfire clean up process, means testing and eligibility criteria for access to assistance grants, insurance concerns, and questions raised by businesses directly and indirectly impacted by the fires," Mr Northe said.
"Now concerns are being raised about the Brumby Government wanting to try and silence public servants by having just one legal team representing the various arms of government at the Royal Commission.
"I urge locals to take this opportunity to voice their concerns and relay their experiences."
Mr Northe said the community meetings would play an essential role in examining how the bushfires came to cause so much damage and loss of life and to help Victorians pave a way forward to ensure such an event wouldn’t happen again.
Registration to the community meets is essential. To register, please call 1800 842 463
