Olympic Gold Medallist in Latrobe’s Herald Sun Tour Team

The 2004 Herald Sun Cycling Tour will be a major event for the Latrobe City region.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 25th August 2004 - Back to News

Not only does the Latrobe City Team consist of five professional and talented cyclists, but for the first time in the fifty-two year history of the event, the final day of the Tour will be held in Traralgon.

The Latrobe City Team will consist of cyclist Luke Roberts, who won a Gold Medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games on Sunday night; fellow Australian cyclist Corey Sweet; Tomas Buchacek from the Czech Republic; and German cyclists Bjorn Glasner and David Kopp.

Destination Latrobe Events Manager, Janiene Ayre, said that having such a strong team competing in the Tour and hosting the final stage of the event will bring a significant profile to the entire Latrobe region.

"Luke is well known in the world of cycling, and also in the Herald Sun Cycling Tour. He lost the event by only 10 seconds last year, and it is his dream and ambition to take the trophy this year with his dedicated Latrobe City team mates by his side," Janiene said.

"The Destination Latrobe Events Team has been involved in a long negotiation period with the Herald Sun Tour Director so that the final stage of the Herald Sun Cycling Tour can take place in Latrobe City. The final stage is traditionally considered the biggest day of the eleven-day event as the focus is on who will retain or reclaim the winner’s trophy. The final day of the race will be contested in Kay Street, Traralgon and it is a fantastic event to add to Latrobe’s busy calendar," Janiene concluded.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the decision to hold the final stage of the event in Latrobe was based on the praise that the municipality received from riders in the Tattersall’s Cup.

"Traralgon is ideally suited to host the final stage of the Herald Sun Cycling Tour, and the prestigious event will add another feather in our cap as a cycling destination. With our hills and varied landscape, the final day will prove to be a challenge for the riders," Cr White said.

The Destination Latrobe Events Team will work with the community and sporting groups over the next few months to develop a program of activities designed to attract a big crowd in Traralgon on the final day of the Herald Sun Cycling Tour.

The Tour begins in Melbourne on Thursday 14 October and concludes in Traralgon on Sunday 24 October.
