Launch Of Art TourThe Bass Hotel hosted a very enjoyable evening on Friday, 9 July for the launch of the 2006/2007 Bass Coast Art Tour Brochure. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 17th July 2006 - Back to News The launch was well attended by artists and writers, as well as representatives of historical groups, sporting clubs and art groups.
The Art Tour Brochure is now into its sixth year and this year features 21 artists and their art. The brochure maps their locations around the Shire and also includes major landmarks and historical tours.
The launch was hosted by a special guest Carol Atwell, Director of Brecknock Consulting, a firm that oversees cultural planning and public art projects in Victoria.
Ms Atwell launched this years Art Tour with an inspirational speech on the role of artists and cultural activities within the community.
"Artists today are valuable assets to any community," said Ms Atwell.
"I think that the arts make a contribution to quality of life that is probably most important and needed when times are hard or life is tough.
"It’s the thing that can take us out of ourselves."
Ms Atwell went on to commend Council’s support for the arts.
"Council’s role has moved from that of just roads, rates and rubbish," continued Carol.
"There is a greater awareness that arts and culture has real benefits for a happy community.
"The artists detailed in this year’s Art Tour Brochure all express something of the spirit and values of Bass Coast.
"Many of the artists listed the coast as their inspiration either in terms of theme and some with the materials of their artworks."
Ms Atwell said that the brochure is unique in Gippsland.
"This brochure should provide inspiration to draw visitors back to the area over and over, and let locals know of what exists in their own backyard.
The Art Tour Brochure is compiled by the Bass Coast Arts and Cultural Forum with support from the Bass Coast Shire Council. Copies are available from all Council Customer Service and Visitor Information Centres.
